Plated | Soft Boiled Eggs with Soldiers
Episode 2
The first time I heard “eggs and soldiers” I was driving to work and listening to The Clockmaker’s Daughter by Kate Morton. I immediately thought, “What the heck is a soldier?” Context clues led me to believe it definitely was a breakfast food and that children could be involved in making it (one of the characters had her son helping to make the soldiers.) I then googled it and saw that the “soldiers” are just pieces of toast cut into strips. As I continued to scroll, I noticed the eggs were served in an egg cup, which is fancier than any way I’ve ever eaten an egg.
The crazy thing about this is how simple and affordable it is, but looks like you put a lot of work into it. And if you just love dipping your toast into the runny part of the yolk, then you will LOVE this, because that’s literally all it is.
Soft Boiled Eggs with Soldiers
Ingredients
- 6 Eggs
- 6 Slices Bread
- Butter to spread on the toast
- Salt/Pepper
You can adjust the number of eggs and toast slices as needed.
Preparation
- Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil. Place the eggs in the water and lower the temperature to simmer for 6 minutes.
- While this is happening, either broil or toast the bread.
- Also while the eggs are cooking, fill a bowl with ice.
- Once the eggs are finished cooking, immediately deposit into the ice bath (to stop the cooking.)
- Butter the toast and cut into slices.
- Cut off the top of the egg, and serve with salt and pepper in the egg cups.
- Dip the soldiers into the yolk and eat the remaining egg with a spoon.
It is really that simple. And, I found so many different kinds of egg cups to go with different occasions: Floral Design, Stainless Steel, Colorful – these would be so pretty Easter morning, Blue design, chickens, pressed glass, Le Creuset, and a unicorn. My plate is from Z Gallerie and is pretty old, but I found similar styles: here and here.
Make sure to tag me, @ToasttoPostBlog, if you try out this recipe. I’ll leave you with something funny – I get tagged quite a bit in people’s food posts that involve toast – I guess because of the name – Toast to Post. I get tagged in restaurant openings, avocado toast pics, oh, and sometimes people giving toasts – like speeches. Have a great day!
Cheers – MP
