4 Things I Learned From The LadyBossBlogger Course
When I first started ToasttoPost.com almost three years ago, I really had no idea what I was doing. It started as a hobby, more of an online journal, where I would document things I did, products I liked, and the occasional gift guide. As I got further along and started gaining followers, I realized there was so much potential to monetize my site; however, I had no idea how to get started.
There is an abundance of information (some trustworthy and some not) out there, and I didn’t know where to turn… which is where LadyBossBlogger’s “How to Make Money As An Instagram Influencer” course comes in. I have learned so much from it and would like to give a HUGE thank you LadyBossBlogger + Elaine Rau for sponsoring this post.
The course walks you through everything from:
- Time management
- Branding
- Content creation
- Pitching
- Working with brands
- Making money
- Legal
There are 7 sections with a BONUS section at the end with additional material. Below, I’ll walk you through 4 of the things that have been beneficial for me.
1. Scheduling & Organization
I’m starting with this category because it is by far the toughest for me. Working a full-time job and being a mama to two-year-old twins consumes most of my time.
I also like to work out, cook, hang out with friends, and watch Netflix, so it’s hard to squeeze in blogging and content creation. I tend to just post when it’s convenient for me – which usually means I’m not consistent.
One thing I learned is that by blocking out time in my calendar to work on blog stuff, I am more productive. I put it in my calendar just like a meeting or training, and know that that is my time to sit and work. I even take a step further and break that down into subsections – content creation, writing blog posts, planning Instagram posts, etc.
To be a successful influencer, you have to stay consistent and organized. It is tough, but the course offers various resources to get you there.
2. Media Calendar & Posting Tips
By now, we all know that it’s best to post daily and consistently, but do you ever find yourself thinking, “Oh no, I need to post something, and have no idea what to post.”
This course gives you an Evergreen Insta Calendar that is perfect for times like this. It goes into major detail on how to plan and schedule your posts with Planoly, Tailwind, and the Instagram Drafts folder and which option is best for your purpose.
But, just throwing up a random picture to your feed won’t do the trick. You need to create images that will make people stop scrolling and look at your picture. Things to consider when creating content is emotion, lighting, angles, background, etc.
Also, here’s a tip – if people see other influencers in your pictures that the recognize, there is a higher likelihood of them checking out your profile. The course goes into all sorts of little tips and tricks like this as well.
3. FTC Guidelines
Wait, like the Federal Trade Commission? Yes. The influencer industry has laws and regulations that need to be followed just like any other industry, especially when a “material connection” exists.
Material connections include everything from being paid, receiving a gift, or even having a business or family relationship with the business. You have to disclose to your followers if this type of relationship exists, either by using #ad or #sponsored in your post.
There is a lot more to it than just using these hashtags. I learned a lot in this section and have a lot to work on going forward to make sure I’m properly following all of the guidelines. Also, you always need to be honest with your reviews.
I remember a blogger once gave a review on a trip she had gone on, and she was completely honest and said while she enjoyed the trip, she probably wouldn’t go back to the same place again.
Some people were outraged that she would say something negative, while others (including myself) respected her even more for giving an honest review.
4. Media Kit & Pitching
I don’t have a media kit. I’ve heard a lot about them, see threads about them, but I’ve never sat down and made one for myself. After completing this course, I now know how important it is to create one.
Brands want something to look at that gives them a summary of you and your brand and what you can do for them. They aren’t looking to hand out freebies, but they are looking for partnerships that will give them results.
The course walks you through all of the topics that need to be in your media kit, and where you can find free templates. Once you’ve established your media kit, it is time to start pitching yourself to brands. I know, scary, right?
Your pitch should be clear and focused and include your media kit. There is an entire section on pitching to brands with pointers for better results.
