Plated | Oven Poached Pears

Episode 14

These oven poached pears are the perfect addition to any holiday meal. With sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon, they are sure to make your house smell wonderful while also satisfying your sweet tooth.

The pears need to be a good mixture of ripe and firm. Not too soft or else they will get too mushy, but not too hard either. The easiest way to core them after peeling is to slice in half and then use a melon baller or spoon to remove the core. If you don’t have a mellon baller, don’t worry, I don’t either. I just used a spoon. Here is an example from Martha Stewart.

Oven Poached Pears

Ingredients

  • 4 ripe but firm pears, peeled, cored and cut in half
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup golden raisins
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/3 cup crumbled feta cheese
  • Optional: chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Trim the back of the pear halves so that they lay flat and arrange in a baking dish.
  2. Combine the sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a mixing bowl. Stir in the golden raisins.
  3. Fill the pear cavities with about half of the sugar mixture. Add the water to remaining sugar mixture and pour into the baking dish around the pears.
  4. Bake the pears for approximately 45 minutes – until they are golden and syrupy.
  5. Arrange the pears on a serving platter and top with the syrup from the baking dish, feta, and pecans.
  6. Get creative with the toppings and try alternating them or mixing and matching. I also thought about how delightful these would be with either homemade ice cream or homemade cream! It just keeps getting better and better!
