|The Monday Post| #19 – The Work Wear Edit

“Some women choose to follow men, and some women choose to follow their dreams. If you’re wondering which way to go, remember that your career will never wake up and tell you that it doesn’t love you anymore.”
― Lady Gaga

Having a closet filled with staple pieces for work is KEY when it comes to rushing out the door looking prim and polished. Whether you are a mom with toddlers at your feet, just flew in late last night from vacation, or are starting your very first job, the thought of “what am I going to wear to work today?” can be a little daunting, especially day after day after day. As someone who has spent many hours standing in her closet in the mornings wondering this same question, I’ve put together somewhat of a guide that I think you will find beneficial. With the items below, you’ll be able to mix and match for weeks on end without feeling like you are wearing the same things over and over.

If you know any recent college grads who are about to start their first job or summer internship, make sure to share this with them. If you and your best gal pal were just discussing how you wanted to up your workwear game this weekend, then make sure to share this with her.

1 Blazer

A blazer is an absolute MUST HAVE in your closet. Nothing says professional and sophisticated like a great blazer and you won’t believe the boost in confidence you’ll feel when wearing this one – whether you are prepping for a job interview or a presentation, you’ll be ready to knock it out of the park with this one.

What real consumers are saying about this blazer: “I bought this a few weeks ago to wear for work when meeting with clients and for presentations.. i love it soo much it works with skirt, pants and started wearing it casually with jeans and heels. so versatile.”

4 Tops

The key here is buying blouses that you can mix and match. While leopard print and floral print are all the rage right now, it might make layering and rewearing difficult. I’ve selected four basic tops that you will be able to mix and match with different bottoms.

What real consumers are saying about the Express Portofino shirt: “I’m a huge fan. I have this shirt in probably 20 colors. It is professional, comfortable, and travels really well.”

2 Skirts

Every working girl needs a few pencil midi skirts in her closet. Try going for basic colors – for example, gray and black like below. Tuck in longer blouses to give you a super polished and professional look. Try adding a belt as an accessory, but always keep in mind, in the corporate world, length matters. Also pay attention to any slits that may be in the back. I’ve seen the cutest and most professional looking skirts be ruined by the fact there is a giant slit in the back (which does not look good at all in the office.)

The skirt from Target below comes in 4 different colors – black, navy, grey, and khaki.

What real consumers are saying about the Twill Pencil Skirt from Target: “I first bought these skirts (I have all four colors) under the Merona brand. When I lost weight I wanted to replace them, and was excited to find that the same skirts were available under the “A New Day” brand. These skirts are lined, knee-length (I’m 5’5″) and are comfortable and stylish. They can be dressed up or down and run slightly large. They’re great!”

1 Dress

When you find a good thing, buy it in multiple colors. Just kidding, but actually, not really. This wrap dress comes in both navy and black, and will be perfect for layering or to wear on it’s own. Dress it up with pumps or down with flats.

What real consumers are saying about this dress: “This dress is a perfect black wrap dress. The length hits right above the knee. It looks great with pantyhose and heels or with black tights and booties. The tie is great because it’s long enough to make sure the dress is secure and there are no wardrobe malfunctions. The fit is very flattering. I wear a 6 and ordered a medium because I’m busty and needed to make sure the top wasn’t gaping open. 10/10 recommend.”

2 Pants

You’ll need at least two pair of pants to start off with. You’ll want a pair of slimming black trousers and a pair of dark wash jeans for casual Fridays and such.

Shoes

Pumps

You cannot go wrong with a good pump. If you are strapped for cash, right now, with it being summer, I would go for a nude pump. But, in the fall and winter, you’ll definitely want a black heel.

Mule

What real consumers are saying about these: “These mules are a great addition to any wardrobe, I got so many compliments when I wore them! They’re great quality and true to size. I typically wear a 6.5 in shoes and that was the size I purchased. Honestly, these are my favorite go to pair of shoes when I don’t know what to wear. They’re comfy, casual, and stylish at the same time. I will definitely be ordering in other colors!”
